Food Independence

Roger Doiron is at it again.

As you may know, he developed the “Eat the View” campaign that helped bring a vegetable garden to the White House.

He worked tirelessly to promote the cause and inspire people to start their own victory gardens.

After the ground for the White House garden was broken, he suggested that supporters of the cause turn their attention towards their own state government buildings. Several governors have already started their own gardens or are pledging to do so. Edible gardens are popping up at state and city government buildings.

Now he is declaring that this July 4th should be “Food Independence Day.” Participants should show their support by growing their own food and buying local as much as possible for this day.

As the Facebook petition says, people should :

1. Use the momentum created through the Eat the View to help others see the appeal of becoming locavores (people who strive to eat local foods).

2. “Local foods are good for us, our communities, and the planet. Let’s urge our governors to lead by example by sourcing their July 4th meals locally.”

3. Learn to grow some of your own July 4th food. You can learn from this site, or visit their site. Find local foods here.

4. Put the Food Independence Day widget on your blog or Facebook profile page

5. Sign the petition from Facebook to show that you will be celebrating Food Independence Day.

I just signed the new petition myself that I will be having my own Food Independence Day this 4th of July. Will you be joining us?

It is becoming a lost art, growing our own food. It tastes better, is better for us. We know what is on it. A question-what are they doing with the food that is grown on city property? What will happen to it when it gets ripe?

As far as I understand, many places are donating to local food pantries and shelters. A win-win in my book!
