GardenJot – An Online Garden Community

gardenjotBy Vanessa Richins

One reason I am in love with sites like Twitter is because I can learn about gardening ’round the country, as well as the entire world.

I enjoy seeing pictures people have posted and hearing about the plants in their city.

Each garden has its own microclimate.

A apple tree in New York may grow quite differently than an apple tree in Utah. I can write and give general guidelines about how a plant often grows…but depending on conditions near you, it could turn out to have problems that are unusual, or it may need different care.

Enter GardenJot. They are an online community you can join to meet gardeners in your local area and learn more about how to have a good gardening experience. Participants can upload pictures to show off their yards and gardens, as well as discuss growing plants.

I am pleased with one of their questions, since we’re concerned with urban gardening, which can sometimes have limitations.

“What if I only have a windowbox or a single potted plant, can I add them as a garden?

Yes. GardenJot is for all gardeners. My mom is a Master Gardener with an incredible garden. I’m a beginner currently with just two potted plants on my fire escape. GardenJot is for both of us. I can use the site to look at gardens and learn how to be a better gardener. My mother can use the site to show off her garden and answer novice gardeners’ questions. All gardens are equal on GardenJot.”

Since I just moved and haven’t had a chance to set up much of a garden in my tiny backyard, it’s fun to know I can still participate by posting up pictures of my lovely houseplants.
