Four Flylady Lessons for Weeding Your Garden
By Vanessa Richins
I’ve always been quite a bit disorganized in life.
I am a very visual person and have to see things in front of me, or I can forget all about them.
I am absentminded and start projects, only to get distracted by something new.
I’ve known about a website called Flylady for a while now. It’s a system developed to help you keep your house and life in order. I recently decided to start really working this into my life so I can be better organized.
I realized tonight that there are some things taught in Flylady that can help gardeners too when they’re battling weeds.
One of the first things she has you do is make sure you wear your shoes every day. It sounded silly to me; I’ve always been fond of going barefoot. She points out, though, that you care more and feel better when you get fully dressed for the day, even if it’s just around the house.
The same can go for gardeners. I feel more prepared when I wear a hat, put on some gloves and have the right tools available. The weeds don’t stand a chance!
Next, you start the whole program by making sure your sink is shiny and clean every morning. It’s such a small thing, but it can set the tone for the whole day. It’s so nice to see at least one place in the house that’s totally spotless.
If your garden seems hopelessly surrounded by weeds, take heart. Choose one small area and make sure that it’s weeded daily to start. As you slowly work on your garden, you’ll have at least one clean place to remind you it’s possible.
She also suggests setting a timer for when you clean. You can do anything for just 15 minutes, right? Set a timer for weeding and go for it. You could do this in small blocks throughout the day or week until you get it under control.
A final trick is the 27 Fling Boogie. You just go through your house and quickly find 27 things to throw away, and then 27 things to give away. As you do this more and more, the house slowly comes under control and it’s usually easier than when you try to force yourself to do it all at once.
Apply the same idea and take out 27 weeds at a time. It may not seem like much at the time, but the more you do this, the cleaner your garden will become.
Are your a Flylady fan? Has it spilled over into your garden? Do share!

Flylady is the only way I can keep my house nice and tidy during gardening season. I spend almost all day outside and Flylady is a great reminder that the rest of the family doesn’t live in my garden, lol!
