Becoming Reacquainted
By Cindy Naas
These past few months I have been MIA from Urban Garden Casual, but I have been busier than ever before.
I moved across country to a new city, a new home and most important, a new gardening zone.
My gardens were well established in my old home, and it was a bit wrenching to leave the.
Going from a zone 7 to a zone 4 has been a real shock to my system, and I am having to relearn many things.
My new home had no landscaping at all. However, with 3/4 of an acre, I now have enough room for my vegetables. At least for now- I’ve warned my fiance that no matter how much land one owns, a gardener never remains satisfied. He now winces when I say things like this.
Anyway, I have spent most of this summer trying to build gardens. This has involved bringing in load after load of topsoil and manure, scrounging free things from Craigslist and buying materials to build raised beds. I have spent more time problem-solving this summer than in all my previous years of gardening, and at times I was a bit daunted by so many challenges. From roses to radishes, deer problems to the weird weather, this has been a learning summer.
My next few columns here at UGC will show you what I’ve done, what my deer has done, and hopefully we’ll all learn from my numerous mistakes, successes, disappointments and victories. I’ve laughed, I’ve cried, and I’ve bought topsoil by the ton, but most important, I’ve gotten my hands dirty. I’ve become handy with a hammer as well as with a sprayer of Deer-Off. I’ve even learned to ask for help, one of my more difficult tasks.
I’m sure some of you can relate. Through it all, though, I have been faithful about keeping my gardening journal and my notes are up to date. Come back soon to see my results, and please tell me about yours!

Oh I know how that is…I grew up in Zone 10. It was very strange when I moved to Zone 5 and had to worry about that whole snow thing, etc. Do love watching buds appear in the spring, though!
Welcome back!
